BAC athletes notch up wins, a club record and PBs in first two SAL meetings

BAC athletes notched up event wins, a new club record, a raft of PBs and a notable individual multi-event performance competing for the Biggleswade Buzzards team in the first two Division 3 North meetings of this season’s Southern Athletics League programme.

The first meeting, held at the Bedford International Athletic Stadium on Saturday May 18, saw ‘A’ event wins for BAC athletes Freddie Steele (M 100m), Donncha Blake (M pole vault) and Alex Ingham (M javelin). There were also wins for the mens’ 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams.

Eleven BAC athletes clocked up PBs, including three of the six U-17 juniors, the youngest age which can take part in the SAL, in the team. They were: George Hardy in the M 400m, with a time of 52.18 to finish third in the A race; Koye Sule, with a time of 53.87 to win the B race in the same event; and Oran Blake who cleared 1.50m in the M high jump to win the B event.

The second SAL meeting, at Luton on Saturday June 15, saw Henry Knox break his own recently-established U-17 men’s 800m BAC club record. His time of 2.05.9 was almost two seconds inside the previous club record he set at an EYAL meeting in May, enabling him to finish fourth of seven runners in the A race.

Three BAC athletes won ‘A’ events at Luton – Freddie Steele in the M 100m with a new PB of 11.00 and in the M 200m; Donncha Blake in the M pole vault; and Leonie Brunning in the W shot put.

With only a small team, a number of BAC athletes multi-evented, including Leonie Brunning who did five events, and Sophie Steele, Orlagh Brunning and Donncha Blake who all did at least three. By far the busiest athlete on the day, though, was Darren Janssen who competed in nine individual events, two of which, the M 110m hurdles and 400m hurdles, he won!

Biggleswade’s next SAL meeting is at Horspath, Oxford, on Sunday July 14. It would be great to have a few more BAC seniors, U-20s, U-23s and U-17s in the team to strengthen our presence.
