BAC athletes set many new PBs at the Bedfordshire Open

Twenty BAC members got their 2024 outdoor athletics season off to a flying start by setting a total of 27 new PBs – several of them by big margins – during the Bedfordshire AAA Open Graded Meeting at Sandy on a breezy but dry Saturday April 6.

A few of BAC’s field event athletes had previously taken part in a ‘Throws’ event at Peterborough in late March but for most members the Open was their first chance this year to compete in an outdoors athletics meeting. A total of 35 BAC members, including 26 juniors, were among the more than 220 track and field entries from nearly 30 clubs.

The biggest new PB of the day among BAC’s field event competitors was achieved by Bradley Cant in the javelin with a massive increase of more than 4 metres over his previous best distance to hit 29.8m. That achievement was made even more impressive by the fact he has just gone up an age group so his new PB was with a 600g javelin compared to last season when he was throwing a 400g implement.

Other PBs in throwing events were achieved by:

Oran Blake: javelin (23.92m); hammer (25.48m); discus (24.13m).

Donncha Blake: javelin (32.11m); discus (30.61m).

Corey Scanlan: hammer (49.13m); discus (45.6m), shot put (13.0m).

In the jumps category, there were PBs for:

Fenya Treece: long jump (4.74m).

Danae Karavaggelis: long jump (4.23m).

Ariana Lewis: long jump (3.74m).

On the track, two of BAC’s junior middle distance runners also chalked up impressive new PBs. The first came in the 800m where Sidney Hammond beat his previous PB by more than 10 seconds to record just over 2 mins 17 secs when finishing third in a very competitive race which also saw Henry Knox produce a storming finish down the home straight to snatch victory in just under 2 mins 14 secs, only 0.7 secs outside his PB. The second came later in the day when Oliver Weddell followed up a strong winter cross-country season by knocking nearly 10 seconds off his previous 1500m PB with a time of just under 5 mins 2 secs.

Other BAC PBs in track events included:

Austin Milner: 1500m (5mins 21.34 secs).

Theo Milner: 1500m (5mins 44.4 secs).

Kyle Hill: 400m (63.07 secs).

Mila Irvine-Adcock: 800m (2mins 58.81 secs); 100m (15.87 secs).

Ayla Akay: 200m (35.2 secs); 100m (15.52 secs).

Fenya Treece: 100m (14.01 secs).

Alim Aydin: 100m (12.86 secs).

Nathania Lewis: 100m (15.6 secs).

Koye Sule: 100m (11.96 secs).

Harri Maund: 100m (15.59 secs).

Ariana Lewis: 75m (11.69 secs).
