Great performances at BAC’s latest QuadKids competition evenings

The second round of this season’s QuadKids competition evenings held at our Sandy track on Thursday July 10 and Tuesday July 15 saw BAC’s youngest athletes achieve a likely new club record and several new PBs. Equally encouraging was the presence of 10 new members.

QuadKids is a competition for U-11s encompassing four events − the 75m, 600m, long jump and vortex howler (throwing implement). It is designed to be a first step for young athletes in the world of competitive athletics.

The July 10 event, which took place on a very hot and humid evening, attracted 13 young athletes, including three newcomers who took part after only being with the club for a few weeks. Well done Tom, Harper and Brodie − you did a fantastic job in your first competition.

Notable individual performances included Theia producing a time of 11.4 secs in the 75m sprint which, subject to confirmation, is a new club record for the U-11 girls category; Jacob and Rocco both improving their 75m PBs by 0.5 secs; Madelaine improving her long jump PB by 60cm; Jayden improving his 600m time by 16 seconds and his vortex throw by 5m; and Jacob improving his overall points total by 26 points.

All the 10 children who took part in earlier QuadKids competitions bettered their previous overall points score and improved in at least three events.

Unfortunately, the weather for the competition on July 15 was not the best. It was very windy with a few rain showers, producing very tough conditions for the vortex throw and resulting in many of the children being wet and cold on the start line of the 600m at the end of the evening.

A total of 16 athletes took part, seven of whom were new members. Welcome to Oscar, Cora, Ada, Liya, Garvan, Henry and to Eddie who came for his first visit. A great start for you all on your athletics journey.

Notable individual performances included Leo Forster, David, Nathan and Teddy all improving their 75m times by 0.3 seconds; Teddy improving his long jump by 63cm; Adam improving his 600m time by 10 seconds; Callum improving his vortex throw by 70cm; and Leo Forster improving his overall points score this time by 29 points.

Louise Cant, BAC’s coach for fundamentals who works with the young athletes, said she wanted to thank all the parents who came along to support the children on both nights. “In particular, thank you to those who helped with registration or by picking up a stopwatch, raking or measuring in the long jump pit and retrieving howlers.

“We are also so grateful to our wonderful officials for coming along on both evenings to give our youngest athletes a taste of the competition world. Big thanks go to Terry our starter, Carol our chief timekeeper, David and Damer our field officials. Thanks also go to the lovely Brunning family who gave up their time to come and set everything up for the evenings.”

Congratulations to Nathan Cornwall who last month beat the longstanding club record for the U-11B 600m (1:57.4 set in 1999!) with a time of 1:55.3 in a race at a Watford Minors Open Meeting.
