BAC athletes win gold at two county championships

BAC’s 18-strong contingent at this month’s Bedfordshire AAA 2024 County Track & Field Championships won 14 gold medals, set at least one new club record and achieved more than a dozen PBs.

The championships, which were combined with those of Hertfordshire AAA, kicked off on Monday May 6 with 1500m races at the Ridlins Track in Stevenage. All the other events were held Saturday/Sunday May 11/12 at the Woodside Stadium in Watford.

Saturday May 11 also saw two more BAC athletes compete in the Cambridgeshire County Championships in Cambridge and come away with four gold medal finishes between them.

The 10 BAC athletes who won gold medals at the Bedfordshire County Championships were:

·         Freddie Steele, U-20M 100m and 200m

·         Arlo Treece, U-20M javelin

·         Donncha Blake, U-20M pole vault

·         Hannah Brunning U-20W discus and javelin

·         Oran Blake, U-17M discus and hammer

·         Bradley Cant, U15B discus and javelin

·         Fenya Treece, U-15G long jump

·         Esa Blake, U-15G javelin

·         Ayla Akay, U-13G 200m

·         Ross Bone, U-13B javelin

In addition to the gold medals, BAC athletes also won a number of silvers and bronzes.

The new club record was achieved by Lauren Bone whose PB of 5.22.42 in the U-15G 1500m knocked over 2 seconds off her own previous record set only last month.

BAC’s three other championship 1500m runners also achieved PBs Oliver Weddell in the U-15B race in 4.49.54; Austin Milner in the U-13B event in 5.05.96; and Theo Milner in the same race in 5.27.05.

BAC athletes who achieved PBs over the two main days of the championships included Fenya Treece, U-15G 100m (13.70) and 200m (28.13); Lauren Bone, U-15G 800m (2.40.59); Ayla Akay, U-13G 100m (15.26) and 200m (31.29); Oran Blake, U-17M discus (28.40); Esa Blake, U-15G discus (16.15m) and hammer (18.02m); Ross Bone, U-13B javelin (27.25m).

The BAC winners at the Cambridgeshire championships were Nathania Lewis who claimed a hat-trick covering the U-13G 100m, 200m and long jump; and Leonie Brunning who won the U-23W shot put and came second in the javelin. Nathania also achieved new PBs in the 100m (14.31) and the 200m (29.09), both in the heats.
