Biggleswade team produces a great finale to the SAL season
Several veteran, new and returning athletes helped boost the size of the Biggleswade team for this season’s fourth and final Southern Athletics League (SAL) Division 3 East match at our home Sandy track on Saturday August 30 and that showed in the results.
The 23-strong BAC team finished fourth on the day with 317 points, by some distance the club’s highest points total for the season, and fifth in the final table. It was encouraging to see the team increase its match-day points total for each successive meeting through the season (217, 243, 267, 317).
There were also some fine individual performances at Sandy, including the setting of a first club record for the senior women’s 5,000 metres, eight ‘A’ string wins and eight PBs.
● Felicity Wall, on her SAL debut for BAC, set the new club record with a time of 23:01.9 when finishing third in the senior women’s 5,000 metres race.
‘A’ string wins were achieved by:
● Freddie Steele, men’s 100m and 200m
● George Hardy, men’s 400m
● Ryan Kennerley, men’s 100mH (with Darren Janssen winning the B string race to secure maximum points for the club from that event)
● Donncha Blake, men’s pole vault
● Alex Ingham, men’s javelin (with Arlo Treece winning the B string competition to secure maximum points)
● Leonie Brunning, women’s shot put (with Orlagh Brunning winning the B string competition to secure maximum points); and women’s hammer (with Hannah Brunning winning the B competition to secure maximum points).
Official (Power of 10) PBs were set by:
● Sidney Hammond, 800m (2:04.67) and triple jump (9.19m)
● James Watson, 1500m (5:39.60) and 5,000m (20:59.1)
● Kareem Davis, 100m (12.05)
● Darren Janssen, 2000m S/C (8:34.72)
● Oran Blake, pole vault (2.55m)
Other notable performances included:
● Leonie competing in six individual field events and two relays; Alex and Darren both each competing in five individual events; and Sid and Hannah each competing in three individual events and a relay.
● Women’s V-40 athlete Cat Hase stepping in to ensure Biggleswade could field a mixed 4 x 400m relay team, having earlier run in the women’s 200m
● James Watson running in the men’s 1500m only just over an hour after finishing the men’s 5,000m!
● The club having enough athletes available to field teams for all three relays – men’s 4 x 100m, women’s 4 x 100m and mixed 4 x 400m.
