Nathania wins two medals at SEAA Championships
Congratulations to BAC Junior Nathania Lewis who won two medals at this year’s South of England Athletic Association U-13/U-15/U-17 Outdoor Individual Championships held over the weekend of June 7/8.
Competing in the U-13G category, she won a silver medal in the high jump, with a clearance of 1.45m equalling her PB, and a bronze in the long jump. She also only narrowly missed out on a medal in the 200m, finishing fourth in the final.
Two of BAC’s other field athletes also went close to winning medals. Ross Bone finished 4th in the U-13B javelin and Oran Blake was 4th in the U-17M hammer.
The championships were held at the Crystal Palace Athletics Stadium in London, an iconic venue but one which currently needs the major upgrade it is due to get as part of a planned massive redevelopment of the overall sports complex at that site over the next few years.
Unfortunately, damage to some very recent repairs to lanes 6-8 of the stadium track near the finishing line meant only lanes 1-5 could be used for the sprint, 400m and hurdle events. The resulting increase in the number of heats needed for those events, combined with a large number of entries and some heavy rain, meant that by mid-afternoon, the Saturday track programme was running two hours behind schedule.
That caused knock-on problems for three BAC athletes taking part in middle distance events later in the day − Henry Knox (U-17M 800m), Sidney Hammond (U-17M 1500m) and Lauren Bone (U-15G 1500m) − who in addition to enduring a long wait on a chilly, wet afternoon, were also unable to warm up properly due to overcrowding in the area allocated for that. Not surprisingly, none of them were able to produce PBs in their respective heats or qualify to go through to the next round, although Henry only missed out on a place in the semi-finals of his event by less than a second.
