New stadium record set at Sandy One Mile Open

One of the athletes taking part in BAC’s Sandy One Mile Open meeting on Wednesday September 11 won ‘the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow’ by breaking the stadium record for that distance. Many other competitors achieved new PBs.

The meeting, organised to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Roger Bannister breaking the 4-minute mile and Diane Leather achieving the first women’s sub 5-minute mile, took place on an evening of rain and shine weather conditions, at one point including a large rainbow. The programme included four graded one-mile races for runners and one for walkers, plus a 1500m wheelchair event. It attracted a total of nearly 40 entrants of all ages from 14 clubs.

The new stadium record for the mile – and ‘the pot of gold’ £30 prize awarded by the club to any athlete breaking a record at our stadium – went to Huntingdonshire’s Martin Amos who knocked 10 seconds off the previous fastest time when winning Race 4 in 4.44.8.

BAC’s three fastest milers on the night were all juniors − Henry Knox (U-17) who finished 4th in Race 4 in a time of 5.07.7; Sidney Hammond (U-15) with a time of 5.22.5 in the same race; and Austin Milner (U-13) who finished 3rd in Race 3 in 5.37.5. Lauren Bone (U-15) was the fastest female miler of the evening with a time of 6.01.6. A fifth BAC junior, George Hardy (U-17), joined the other four in achieving a PB with 5.43.5. Notable performances from senior BAC members included Kishan Modi winning Race 2 in a time of 5.56.0, also a PB.

Several BAC athletes – including Henry, Sidney, Austin, Richard Bevan, James Watson and Richard Hill – also ran fast enough times to get Power of 10 UK rankings for the mile in their respective age groups. For details, go to the Power of 10 Rankings page and click on ‘Extended Rankings Section’: https://www.thepowerof10.info/rankings/

The majority of BAC and other competitors in all three disciplines – running, walking and wheelchair – set new PBs for their respective distances, although for many of the milers it was also their first official time due to the relative infrequency of races over that distance.

Many thanks to all the competitors who supported the Sandy One Mile Open and the officials who organised it − hopefully we may be able to hold a similar event again next year.
