BAC athletes notch up wins and PBs at EYAL Bedford meeting

A smaller than usual contingent of BAC’s junior athletes in the composite Bedfordshire Lions team which competed in the final Eastern Young Athletes League (EYAL) meeting of the season still managed to achieve three event wins and nine new PBs.

Holiday absences and injuries meant only nine BAC athletes took part in the meeting at Bedford on Sunday July 28 but fortunately the other club which makes up the Lions, Luton, were able to provide 19 athletes to ensure the team as a whole had a decent representation.

BAC’s event winners were Nathania Lewis, U-13G long jump; Isabella Pykerman, U-15G long jump; and Oran Blake, U-17M discus.

Three BAC athletes achieved PBs in two separate events and another three notched up one each. They were: Isabella Pykerman, U-15G 100m (13.7) and long jump (4.55m); Oran Blake, U-17M high jump (1.65m) and discus (28.66m); Sidney Hammond, U-15B 300m (42.17) and high jump (1.58m); Henry Knox, U-17M 400m (55.1); Kyle Hill, U-17M 400m (60.61); and Bradley Cant, U-15B javelin (31.09m).

Several BAC members pushed through the hot and tiring weather to compete in two or three events each to boost the Lions’ points tally. They included Orlagh Brunning, Oran, Sidney, Henry, Nathania and Isabella.

In an end of EYAL season message to all members of this year’s Bedfordshire Lions squad, team managers Michael and Kat Lewis commented: “Thank you to all athletes and their parents/guardians for joining the fourth and final EYAL match of the season.

“Bedfordshire Lions achieved a total of 240 points on the day and 947 points overall, putting us in 19th place amongst 25 competing teams. It was fantastic to see many PBs improved again, as has been the case through all the EYAL fixtures − a testament to the hard work and effort put in during training sessions.

“Special thanks go to all the coaches and volunteers for all their support and commitment, come rain or shine, all through the season − and of course to the event organisers and officials for their support in making it possible for BAC to be part of the EYAL series.

“We look forward to welcoming everyone back for the 2025 EYAL matches.”
