Biggleswade athletes produce a great team performance in the SAL
Some fine individual performances by BAC athletes and the willingness of many to multi-event helped their Biggleswade Buzzards team achieve its best SAL (Southern Athletics League) Division 3 North result of the season at Horspath, Oxford, last month.
Thirteen BAC athletes made the longish journey to Oxfordshire for what was the third of four SAL meetings this summer. Between them, they racked up 256 points to enable Biggleswade to finish fourth of the seven teams competing that day – and only 11 points behind third place.
Six BAC athletes won a total of seven ‘A’ events. In the men’s category, they were: Freddie Steele, 100m; Ryan Kennerley, 110m hurdles; Darren Janssen, 400m hurdles; Donncha Blake, pole vault; and Alex Ingham, javelin. In the women’s section, Leonie Brunning won both the high jump and the shot put.
At least eight BAC athletes achieved new PBs on the day, in some cases, more than one. They included: Hannah Brunning, 100m (15.3) and 200m (31.9); Darren Janssen, 400m hurdles (68.5) and 3,000m steeplechase (15.16.7); Leonie Brunning, hammer (27.76m); Henry Knox, 400m (56.3); Donncha Blake, high jump (1.75m); Arlo Treece, javelin (46.95m); Freddie Steele, triple jump (9.5m); and Alex Ingham, hammer (18.76m).
The individual multi-eventers included Darren (9 events), Leonie (7), Alex (5), Ryan (4), Freddie (3), Hannah (3), Sophie Steele (3), Orlagh Brunning (3), Henry (2) and Donncha (2). The squad commitment also enabled Biggleswade to put out teams in two men’s relays, the 4 x 100m (2nd) and the 4 x 400m (4th).

Biggleswade’s final SAL meeting of the season, also at Horspath, is on Saturday August 17. It would be great to have a few more BAC seniors/veterans, U-23s, U-20s and U-17s in the team to strengthen our presence. If you are available, please contact Sandra (
NOTE: The event covered in this report actually took place on July 14 but there was a long delay before the official results were published, apparently due to an administrative issue.
