Biggleswade finish the SAL season on a high

A combination of some fine individual performances and great team commitment helped Biggleswade Buzzards achieve their highest points tally of the season in their fourth and final SAL (Southern Athletics League) Division 3 North meeting of the season on August 17.

As with the previous SAL fixture in July, the venue was the Horspath stadium on the outskirts of Oxford so it was encouraging to see 14 BAC members make the effort both to get there and then in most cases each compete in several events. Between them, they amassed 268 points to come fourth of the seven teams in their division.

Leonie Brunning was the top performer for Biggleswade, winning four women’s A events (high jump, triple jump, shot put and hammer) among the total of eight individual competitions she took part in. Sophie Steele won three B events (shot put, hammer and discus) of the four she competed in. In the men’s competition, Freddie Steele won the A 200m and Donncha Blake won the A event high jump.

Other notable performances included Ryan Kennerley achieving a PB in the men’s A 400m hurdles (63.4) and, as the only athlete taking part in that event, contribute the maximum seven points to the team score, while U-17 junior Henry Knox again ran well against older athletes in the A races for both the 800m (4th) and the 400m (5th).

Several other Biggleswade athletes notched up new PBs − in three cases, more than one. They included Leonie, pole vault (2.20m) and hammer (31.66m); Danae Karavaggelis, 200m (30.3) and long jump (4.43m); Oran Blake, high jump (1.65m) and 400m (62.7); Hannah Brunning, 100m (15.1); Sophie, 200m (37.5); Donncha, high jump (1.83m); Alex Ingham, hammer (22.67m); and Marcus Ingham, hammer (15.79m).

Most of Biggleswade’s athletes multi-evented to boost the team’s overall score. In addition to Leonie, they included Ryan (5 individual events), Alex (5), Sophie (4), Marcus (3), Donncha (3) and Freddie (3), while Danae, Henry, Oran, Hannah and Orlagh Brunning all did two. In addition, the team was able to put out squads for three of the relay races – men’s 4 x 100m (finished 2nd), women’s 4 x 100m and mixed 4 x 400m.

Biggleswade Buzzards team: Hannah Brunning, Leonie Brunning, Orlagh Brunning, Sandra Ingham, Danae Karavaggelis, Sophie Steele, Donncha Blake, Oran Blake, Alex Ingham, Marcus Ingham, Ryan Kennerley, Henry Knox, Freddie Steele, Arlo Treece.
