The Three Counties Cross Country League commenced last weekend, and for many signals the arrival of the Autumn/Winter running season. For many years Biggleswade Athletic Club has supported this League which has grown substantially in recent times, and now sees participation of 14 clubs from across Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire and Hertfordshire (and Buckinghamshire, so not quite Three Counties anymore!) The first race was hosted by Wellingborough & District Athletic Club at the Irchester Country Park, Wellingborough. This is the second year the race has been held there and involves running two laps of mixed terrain, hilly trails around the Park.
Coach and runner on the day, Rob Morgan commented, "The mixed terrain made it difficult as in places trail shoes were adequate, but elsewhere spikes would have been beneficial for the muddy patches. This was, however, a good, challenging course to do battle with the other clubs’ runners. And with the course criss-crossing meant words of encouragement could be given to my BAC team mates.”
Official results are awaiting publication, however, Emily Varley had another superb run to place first female overall against tough competition from the other clubs. This follows her prize-winning performance the weekend before at the Standalone 10k. Richard Hill, Roxann Holder and Paul Swinburne also demonstrated their continued improvement during the course of this year with strong finishes. Whilst Nick Sinclair and James Watson made their League debuts for the Club, having not run cross country since their school days! In the team results announced on race day, Biggleswade Men came 10th and the Women 13th.
A special thanks also goes to member Bev Strong for coordinating entries and undertaking the administration for the BAC runners.
Full League results will be published on the Three Counties Cross Country League website shortly.
The Three Counties Cross Country League runs from October to February. All races are off-road and routes are typically along trails and footpaths, through woodland, parkland or around farmland. It's a fun, social League solely based on finishing position rather than time. And as a reward, tea and cake are served afterwards for all runners. Next up is Delapre Park, Wootton on 24 November.
